We grow cut flowers - pure and simple!
We were blessed enough to acquire 21 pristine acres out of a few hundred acres (used for cotton and peanut cultivation during the 1800's) which later turned into mini-ranches in Wise County, Texas.
Our neighbours are the most kind and helpful Texan folk ever (nothing unusual to find a bogged down tractor during ploughing season pulled out of the mud when we return home).
This is what we saw when we were out shopping for land (another sign underneath which read: 'FIREWOOD' had fallen off), but at the same time the previous owners were ecstatic when we asked and a deal was done within a week upon first inquiring.

Cut flowers don't grow in Texas! Well, we do grow a few (100,000 stems so far this season , and are pretty good at what we've achieved to date - climatic extremes (11 degrees F below on January 21, 2004 or how about 114 degrees F on August 3, 2003) and rainfall variations are blissfully ignored and we just keep on planting.
We use sustainable practices (NO herbicides and mostly natural pesticides when required by our visiting grasshopper population) to ensure healthy growing conditions. Mostly pollenless varieties are grown. We have one lone Guinea (sole survivor out of an on-going Coyote banquet - 52 of his brethren got snacked on during 2006) who is trying his level best to eat every bug he can snag.
We compete against imports from the rest of the world - which are really commodities instead of floral stems and are imported by the ton. Unfortunately for you as the consumer it shows up at your house at the end of an exhausting 7 to 14 day trip and literally falls apart in front of your eyes. The imports have also been chemically resuscitated and don't really have a flower fragrance. Overall losses have to be accounted and you inevitably end up paying for this warped business model.
When picking, we immediately place stems in fresh water and deliver within 24 hours after that. Any of our products can last up to 3 weeks and give you a long time to enjoy your purchase. And they should remind you of what your mother and her mother grew when you were growing up. Our customers capitalize on shelf life and you as consumer get the benefit in the long run. Over a season our customers lose less than .01% of product shipped.
What we had in our vision for the future:

21 acres of Bermuda lawn (well fertilized though):
